Branch Announcements
v On Tuesday, August 3, 2010, Stafford County will be participating in Stafford County’s annual National Night Out event at the Stafford Marketplace. The Stafford NAACP will have a table at the event and encourages all of its members to invite their friends and family to this great event. Please note, that we will not have a general membership meeting for the month of August.
v On Saturday, September 11, 2010, the Stafford County Branch in partnership with local community organizations will be commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the integration of public schools in the Rappahannock region. The theme for the event is “The Story Behind the Headlines.” Additional details about the event will be forthcoming. For more information, please contact an Executive Board Member.
v Do you have what it takes to capture the crown? On Sunday, September 12, 2010, the Stafford County Branch will be holding its annual King & Queen Pageant. Monthly informational meetings are currently taking place. Please contact an Executive Board Member for more information.

v On July 31st – August 1, 2010, there will be a Rites of Passage for Young Men (ages 12 – 20) hosted by the Spotsylvania NAACP. The Rites of Passage is designed to strengthen the body, challenge the mind, and build character, self-esteem, and pride in young men on their way to becoming a man. They are looking for volunteers, preferably men, women are welcome to join in and assist also.

v Free IT Training for 18-24 year olds who live in the DC, MD, VA, Boston, Atlanta or San Francisco areas with a high school diploma or GED, between the ages of 18-24 yrs old with an interest in IT. Refer them to this site. Go to www.yearup.org to learn more about this free program. The program asks for a 1 year commitment between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. Students are provided with a stipend and after six months, internships at companies such as Freddie Mac and AOL just to name a few.
v OPEN HAND Summer Employment Program is looking for students between the ages of 16-18; hourly wage is $7.50. The program consists of a 20 hour work week with the 5th day devoted to mentoring and continued education and runs from Jun 29th – Aug 20th. Students must meet the financial eligibility requirements (combined family income of $28,000 for 2 persons; add $7,200 for each additional family member). Center for Talent Development is offering through its Gifted LearningLinks program a unique opportunity for academically talented high school students to take a cutting-edge undergraduate course online. Students who successfully complete Climate Catastrophes in Earth History: Earth 105 is eligible for Northwestern University course credit. v Operation Purple® Leadership Camps are a program of the National Military Family Association. These camps are geared toward military children ages 15-17 who have shown an ability and willingness to lead and mentor in their respective military and civilian communities. Leadership Camps strive to create strong teen leaders by giving them the tools needed to develop self-confidence and the opportunity to test their strengths and abilities. Each camp provides a unique environment for teens to receive leadership experience in the outdoors. v Brown Leader Summer Institute @Brown University for students interested in learning and practicing leadership skills including public speaking, interpersonal communication, problem solving, conflict resolution and teamwork. v English, Math, and Geography Summer enrichment programs for rising juniors and seniors at University of Mary Washington Jun 21st – Jul 2nd. Costs vary from $250 -$600 for these 2 week programs. v Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps 2010- Join a structured program of work performing priority park development and park maintenance projects while taking part in planned environmental education, job readiness training and recreational activities. Crews will be supervised by 3 college age or older supervisors; crews will be composed of approximately 10 young people ages 14 – 17. All meals and housing will provided in addition to a $500 stipend at the end of a complete session. Sessions One: June 21 – July 11………. Session Two: July 19 – August 8. Community Service Opportunities v Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center can provide community service hours. Students 16 years and older who pledge to serve at least one shift per week, successfully complete a volunteer orientation session and demonstrate exemplary customer service skills can serve in the following areas: main information desk staffing, Hospital gift shop staff, Guest escorts, surgical unit greeters, patient access facilitators, flower/mail delivery and administrative assistance. For your service, volunteers will receive discounted meals, invitations to hospital and volunteer recognition events, and will be eligible to receive recommendation letters following 75 hours of service. Although students between the ages of 14-16 are welcome, the opportunities are limited. v Cuidado Casero Home Care of VA, Inc is looking for volunteers to help provide crafts and other items of interest to terminally ill patients. v Spotsylvania Department of Social Services needs volunteers to baby sit children while their parents attend parenting classes on Tues. and Thurs. from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Students will be overseen by the program facilitator at all times, so no teen will be left alone with any of the children who can range in age from 0-11 years old.
